Laudato Si’ Ecological Exposure Programme Held at Kanthavara Forest

21-08-2025

MANGALORE, August 21, 2025 – The students of philosophy from St Joseph’s Institute of Philosophy (SJIP), studying at St Joseph’s Interdiocesan Seminary (SJS), Jeppu, Mangalore, in collaboration with the Catholic Association of South Kanara (CASK Centenary Trust) and the Chair in Christianity, Mangalore University, undertook an ecological exposure visit to the Kanthavara Forest Base Camp at the foothills of the Western Ghats.

The programme was designed to help participants appreciate the beauty of creation and deepen their understanding of Laudato Si’, Pope Francis’ encyclical on the care for our common home. The day began with an orientation session at Kanthavara Grama, highlighting the importance of preserving the reserve forest.

A “Broken Forest Tour” immersed the students in nature and raised awareness about the causes of deforestation, urban animal invasion, the biodiversity crisis and the true sources of water. A visit to the Bamboosetum, home to 68 bamboo varieties, emphasized the plant’s ecological role, producing 30% more oxygen than other species.

Sessions during the day explored both the scientific and spiritual dimensions of Laudato Si’. Environmentalists pointed out that unchecked capitalism poses a greater threat to ecology than religion. Drawing from the encyclical, the discussions reflected on four key themes: the problem, ownership, carrying capacity and the need for healing and conversion.

At Francis Miyawaki View Point, students planted saplings as a symbolic act of renewal and hope. The day concluded with reflections on love, inspired by St Augustine’s words: “Love God and do whatever you please: for the soul trained in love to God will do nothing to offend the One who is Beloved.”

In the evening, a felicitation programme was held to thank the CASK Centenary Trust for its moral and financial support. Guests included Mr Richard C. Rodriguez (Managing Trustee), Dr Derek Antony Lobo (Secretary), Mr Norbert N. Shenoy (Treasurer), Mrs Clotilda Shenoy, Mrs Patricia Lobo and Mrs Patricia Mathias. The Rector of St Joseph’s Seminary expressed gratitude for their contribution to the students’ formation. Students also shared their enriching experiences and acknowledged
